Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, LG, OM, PC, FRS (born 13 October 1925) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990.Thatcher was the longest-serving British Prime Minister since William Gladstone, and had the longest continuous period in office since Lord Liverpool in the early nineteenth century. She is also the only woman to have served as Prime Minister, one of only two to lead a major political party in the UK or to hold any of the four great offices of state (the second in both cases being Margaret Beckett). Undoubtedly one of the most significant British politicians in recent political history, she is also one of the most divisive, being loved and loathed in on different sides of the political spectrum.

She made a scathing attack on the Soviet Union. The Soviet Defence Ministry newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda ("Red Star") gave her the nickname "Iron Lady", which was soon publicised by Radio Moscow. She took delight in the name and it soon became associated with her image as an unwavering and steadfast character.
