  Introduction

Whitney Houston was born in August 1963 to singer Emily Drinkard, who performed under the name of Cissy, and her husband and manager, John Houston. Whitney grew up listening and learning from her legendary cousin Dionne Warwick and her mother's close friends, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and Roberta Flack. All of these excellent female singers of the 60's, 70's, and 80's had a profound influence on young Whitney.

By the age of 11, Whitney was a soloist at the church where her mother Cissy served as the music minister. Cissy firmly gave high quality vocal lessons to Whitney. This training, combined with the strong religious convictions in her talented family, provided the security and support Whitney needed to develop her natural singing ability. In her mid-teen years, Whitney had began singing with Cissy, Chaka Khan and Lou Rawls.

Her voice, looks, and determination led the Rock magazine Rolling Stone to call her,“an earth-shattering performer. ”Whitney also found work as model and in 1981 appeared on the covers of“Glamour”and “Seventeen. ”Modeling led to acting roles on TV and in movies. Whitney also continued to sing and released her first album in 1985. On it were the hits,“You Give Good Love,”and“The Greatest Love of All. ”

Recognizing all the many people who contributed to her fame and wanting to assist others who needed help,in 1989 Whitney established a non-profit organization called“The Whitney Houston Foundation For Children, Inc. ”

This organization encourages self-empowerment for young people, provides help for homeless children and for children with cancer or AIDS. This foundation recognizes that we all need to help one another if we are serious about building a quality future for humans.

In 1992,“The Bodyguard”movie earned over 400 million dollars and was a hugely successful showcase for Whitney's acting and singing talents. The Grammy Award winning music from the movie sold well over 33 million copies and is considered to be one of the best selling soundtracks of all time. Two of these songs are featured here.

In“The Bodyguard,”Whitney plays the role of Rachel Marron, a singer that someone is trying to kill. The singer's manager hires a tough professional guard, Frank Farmer, played by Kevin Costner, to protect her.

In this scene at the Fountain Blue Hilton Hotel, Farmer happens to meet another guard, named Greg Portman. Both are now private guards, but at one time they used to work for the Secret Secret Service and guard the President.

  Portman: Hello Frank.

Frank: Hello Portman, it's been a long time. You're on the job?

Portman: Yeah. Well, technically I'm off duty, but the Governor might show up here later. So I thought I'd give it a light check. Someone else is covering him now.

  Frank: How old is she?

  Portman: Maybe 18.

In this very quick conversation Frank has accurately guessed that the“Someone”“covering”the Governor is not another guard providing security cover, but is in fact a naked young woman who is covering the Governor with her body. Or at least she is covering the Governor's penis with some part of her anatomy. Portman confirms this and implies that she is 18, or less, years old.

This is one of innumerable American movie sexual conversations that are difficult to translate and thus are either poorly translated or simply ignored. A similar problem is that nude and sex scenes are often cut when movies are shown outside of America.

For instance, in the movie“Starship Troupers,”the translated Chinese version omitted the nude scene where male and female soldiers are talking while sharing a shower room together. Since in the Chinese version you don' t get to“meet”and listen to one of the naked woman soldiers, a later scene where she silently decides to leave the army, has very little importance and you are left wondering who she is. Yet in the uncut original movie, you can clearly understand the seriousness of her decision.

Let's return to Frank Farmer, Greg Portman, and the entrance of Rachel into the scene.

Rachel: I need a drink. Oh, it's orange juice. So who are you?

  Portman: Greg Portman.

Rachel: I take it you met my bodyguard.

Portman: We used to work together.

Rachel: Oh, so well, well. So what do you do now?

  Portman: Same thing as Farmer.

Rachel: Two samurais , huh? So are you working now?

  Portman: Not right now.

Rachel: Good, because I'm the only person in this room that needs protection. Come on, let's go and get a drink, a real one. (Rachel seductively takes a clinging hold on Portman's arm. )

(The next morning, Rachel and Frank are sitting at a table while being waited on by a maid. )

Rachel: What are you looking at? Probably never had a heavy night in your whole damn disciplined life.

  Maid: Coffee?

Rachel:(Nodding) You know, Farmer, you're a selfrighteous son of a bitch. And don't laugh at me. Don't you dare judge me!

Frank: Give me a break, will you? I didn' t tell you to fuck everybody in the hotel.

Rachel: Fuck this. I don't need this shit from you.

From this friendly conversation you understand that Frank is somewhat annoyed with Rachel for having sexwith Portman, and perhaps a few other gentlemen, during the previous night. Rachel, via her promiscuous sexuality, and the bodyguard through his meticulous attention to the details of his job, are initially effective in resisting their mutual attraction. But that persistent desire to get closer, due to lust. respect, love, or some combination, continues to grow. Paradoxical and improbable as it may seem from the above scene, both Rachel and Frank soon end up having sex. Yet both are unwilling to make a longterm commitment.

In“I Have Nothing,”you realize that despite great wealth, Rachel has nothing if she can't have Frank, the man she loves. Can their passionate love survive? Both the guard and the singer have extremely demanding careers that would require them to be separated for long periods of time. Rachel's easy promiscuity and Frank's zealous commitment to being a perfect bodyguard, might preclude a lasting love.

By the end of the movie,it turns out that Portman,Rachel's temporary sex partner and Frank's former colleague, is the person trying to assassinate her. Is the morality message that you really can't trust even those you have sex with? Is this morality idea often repeated in different American movies? Is Rachel's world a tough place? Does she encourage her chances of having problems by the choices she makes?

What do you prefer, lust, love, or a lusty loving friendship? If these questions befuddle you, how prepared are you for an abortion, motherhood and divorce? Life begets life. If words beguile you, can you take a close and hard look at your potential partner's past behavior? Can people ever really change much?

  I Have Nothing

  Vocal: Whitney Houston

  Share my life.

Take me for what I am,

  'Cause I'll never change

  All my colors for you.

  Take my love,

I'll never ask for too much,

  Just all that you are

  And everything that you do.

I don't really need to look

  Very much further.

I don't want to have to go

  Where you don't follow.

I don't hold it back again,

  This passion inside.

  Can't run from myself.

  There's nowhere to hide.

Don't make me close one more door.

I don't want to hurt anymore.

Stay in my arms if you dare.

  Must I imagine you there?

  Don't walk away from me.

  I have nothing, nothing, nothing,

  If I don't have you,

  You, you, you, you, you.

You see through right to the heart of me,

  You break down my walls,

With the strength of your love.

  Mmm, I never knew

Love like I've known it with you.

  Will the memories survive

Ah, one that I can hold on to?

I don't really need to look

  Very much further.

I don't want to have to go

  Where you don't follow.

  I'm holding back again

  This passion inside.

I can' t run from myself.

  There's nowhere to hide.

  Your love I'll remember forever!

Oh, don't make me close one more door.

I don't want to hurt anymore.

Stay in my arms if you dare,

Or must I imagine you there?

  Don't walk away from me.

  I have nothing, nothing, nothing.

Don't make me close one more door.

I don't want to hurt anymore.

Stay in my arms if you dare,

  Must I imagine you there?

Don't walk away from me, Yeah!

  Don't walk away from me.

Don't you dare walk away from me.

  And I have nothing,

nothing, nothing, If I don't have you, you

  If I don't have you

  Oh, oh.
