Essien Likely to Miss Egypt Trip
Summary: Jose Mourinho expects to withdraw Michael Essien from African Cup of Nations duty with Ghana because of the ankle injury sustained at West Ham. The midfielder was carried off after a foul by Nigel Reo-Coker and the Chelsea manager wants the 23-year-old to have all necessary treatment at the club.
Essien is due to fly to Egypt before Ghana's opener against Nigeria on January 23 but Mourinho, who thinks the player will be out for three weeks, told Chelsea TV yesterday that Essien would probably have to pull out. Essien, I think, is not going, the manager said.
To do treatment it is better to stay with Chelsea. He would be going for nothing. Essien had a scan yesterday but the seriousness of the injury will not be clear until the swelling has gone down.
Bolton Wanderers and Everton are ready to move for Matt Jansen, who is expected to leave Blackburn Rovers today after a meeting with the manager Mark Hughes.
