Dress to impress

Halloween is traditionally the scariest night of the year but really it is just another excuse for a dressing up party. Pubs, clubs, householders join in the fun by decorating their premises with streamers, painting ghosts on their window panes and placing pumpkins on the tables. The streets then become awash with vampires, Frankenstein's monster, witches and skeletons.

Street party Dominic recalls one particular memorable party in Northern Ireland: 'I'd always been a bit of a party pooper for Halloween as dressing up never really interested me. However, my housemate insisted that for Halloween in Derry we had to. Donning a schoolgirl's outfit was a frightening introduction to the world of fancy dress. My hairy legs were ill-suited for my mini-skirt. Nor can I say that I pulled off the accompanying bra and make-up. Derry became a blur of the most wacky and wild costumes, and despite a bitterly cold October wind blowing around my legs, I had an absolute blast.'

Student party Anna recalls: 'When I was a student I remember walking around the streets of Hull dressed as a ghost in a nightdress with a belt around my neck. My friends were dressed as the Mask and a witch. We were art students and held quite a creative party. The walls were decorated with spider's webs; we drank jelly worms in our cocktails and ate eyeballs and green food. We also made a tape of spooky music from horror movies mixed with some classical.'

But it doesn't need to be Halloween to dress up. Almost every week there is reason to put together a new outfit. Even here in the office we had a 'wear your slippers to work day' to raise money for charity.

The Time Warp

It certainly looks like Halloween but it's not¡ For the past 30 years the UK public has been donning basques, suspenders and stilettos and singing along with Brad and Janet in the Rocky Horror Show. Never is costume taken more seriously. Dressing outrageously is as much a part of the entertainment as dancing the Time Warp.

Traffic lights

The latest craze on the dressing up scene is the traffic light party. The clothes you choose represent your availability on the dating scene. If you dress in red, you are taken, if you wear amber/yellow, you are open to suggestions and if you dress in green, you are requesting attention. This way, things are clearer and wires are harder to cross!

(Time Warp)

(Traffic Light)
