Cool And The Gang

Biblical names

For the first time in fifty years, David no longer features in the list of top fifty baby names. Even with famous celebrities such as David Beckham, the name is on the decline. That doesn‘t mean that biblical names are not fashionable. In fact, they are still very popular. There is many a bouncing babe named Samuel, Joshua and Joseph. Hannah and Rebecca are still popular for girls.

Celebrity names

A recent survey by baby company Bounty found that 11% of parents are inspired by the cult of celebrity. The girl‘s name Keira has become popular due to the success of the actress Keira Knightley. Sienna (Sienna Miller) and Scarlett (Scarlett Johannson) have also seen a rise in popularity.

Brand names

Simon Williamson, the managing director of Bounty, told the Observer: ‘In marketing speak, children are being given a brand identity or a unique selling point. In a highly competitive world, parents are looking to the future to see where they want to position their children. Part of that is making them memorable and unique.’ Brand names chosen include Ikea, Moet, L‘Oreal, Armani and Del Monte.

Unique names

Unusual names of the year include Caramel, Apricot, Bambi, Rocky, Tudor, Red, Firelily, Skylark, Tame (standing for ‘the apple of my eye’), Wilberforce and Sunshine. Naming babies after the places that they were conceived remains popular. New names featured are Ely and Finchley. One mother even called her son Ryan after a trip to Ireland on Ryanair.

The Bounty survey found that 25% of parents sought out a name which they thought was unique. It can be very disappointing when they find out this is not true. With everyone jumping on the bandwagon, an unusual name becomes mainstream rather quickly.

One couple from Ipswich bought a book of cool baby names, couldn‘t find anything they liked and opted for Cool instead. The baby’s father told the Metro newspaper, ‘We decided Cool was the coolest name for a boy and it suits him to a T. It’s only when he‘s screaming that I think he’s not quite so cool.‘

With so many unusual names springing up, perhaps calling one‘s offspring plain ’Jane‘ is the only way to be original.

取名Samuel(萨缪尔)、Joshua(约书亚)和Joseph(约瑟夫)的婴儿还是比比皆是。而女名中, Hannah(汉娜)和Rebecca(丽贝卡)仍然是大众的宠儿。

父母们选择的一些品牌名称包括Ikea(宜家)、 Moet(香槟公司)、L'Oreal(欧莱雅)、Armani(阿玛尼)和Del Monte(戴尔蒙特)。

Caramel、Apricot、Bambi、Rocky、Tudor、Red、Firelily、Skylark、Tame(the apple of my eye的首字母缩写,意思是“掌上明珠”)、Wilberforce、Sunshine。 新的名字有Ely,还有Finchley(伦敦地名)。
