Speech of Mr. Jiang Zengwei at the Press Conference of the 2nd China Convention and Exhibition Forum
Distinguished guests and friends from the media:
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We are here today to have the press conference of the Second China Convention and Exhibition Forum. On behalf of the Ministry of Commerce of China and the Organizing Committee of the Forum, I would like to begin by extending my warm welcome to all the distinguished guests and friends from the media present here toady.
Co-sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of China, Beijing Municipal People's Government and the Economic Daily, the Second China Convention and Exhibition Forum will be convened in Beijing International Convention Center from 28th to 29th November 2005. Now I would like to brief you on the 2nd Forum.
1, Importance of holding the China Convention and Exhibition Forum
Recent years have witnessed strong and rapid development in China's convention and exhibition industry. Exhibition activities are as active as never. With an annual growth of 20% in overall scale, China's convention and exhibition industry has suddenly risen as a new force in the global arena and is manifesting sound development momentum. According to relevant statistics, in 2003, the number of trade and economy related exhibitions nationwide reached 3,298, representing 5.524 million exhibitors and 17.51 million of headcount of professional visitors; and festivals and events numbered more than 5,000, with headcount of participants reaching several hundred million. As China's exhibition industry continues its process of being more professional, market-based, and international, a number of brand-name exhibitions of global fame have emerged, such as the Guangdong Fair, or Chinese Export Commodities Fair. Our convention and exhibition industry is playing an increasingly remarkable role in promoting trading and economic exchanges and expanding export, and has grown to be one of the fastest growing industries of great development potential in China's national economy.
However, in its process of development, China's convention and exhibition industry has encountered some undeniable problems, such as fraudulence, overlapping and redundancy, IPR infringement, deficiencies in the management system, lack of legal regulations, overheated exhibition facility construction, disruptive competition and the lagging behind of industrial associations. Moreover, since China's WTO accession, foreign exhibition companies have started to enter the Chinese convention and exhibition market. In the context of new competition pattern, domestic enterprises desiderate development strategy adjustment and enhanced international exchanges and cooperation so as to better accommodate economic globalization.
As the competent authority for the convention and exhibition industry, the Ministry of Commerce has always committed itself to developing China's convention and exhibition industry, and supporting domestic enterprises to actively engage in mutually beneficial cooperation with their international counterparts for the purpose of win-win development. In December 2003, the Ministry of Commerce, together with China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the Economic Daily, sponsored the first China Convention and Exhibition Forum in Beijing with the theme of "convention and exhibition and cities". The success of the first session has enhanced the social impact of the convention and exhibition industry, promoted the dissemination and deepening of awareness regarding a city's environment for exhibitions, facilitated exchanges between the convention and exhibition businesses with city governments, and thus positively driven along the development of China's convention and exhibition industry.
In a bid to further promote the sound development of the convention and exhibition industry, the Ministry of Commerce has made a decision on convening the China Convention and Exhibition Forum every two years, and identified it as one of the major domestic trade events to be sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce. The Second China Convention and Exhibition Forum will focus on the theme of "System-Policy-Order", and organize in-depth discussions on the management system and government regulations of domestic and foreign convention and exhibition industries, and on such issues as the commercialization, internationalization and standardization of the convention and exhibition industry and the festival and event business, human resources training and legislative construction so as to learn and draw upon advanced experience for the purpose of promoting the sound development of China's convention and exhibition business.
The organizers of the 2nd Forum are Genertec International Advertising & Exhibition Co. Ltd., the Federation of Consumer Products Trade Centers of All Chinese Cities, and Beijing Festivals and Events Culture Development Center. The Forum's preparation has been greatly supported and assisted by the people's governments of various provinces and cities in China, competent authorities for the convention and exhibition industry, economic and commercial counselor's offices of Chinese embassies, embassies of various countries in China, and a vast number of industrial associations. Currently, the Forum's preparation is in smooth progress, and has been basically completed. Domestic and foreign convention and exhibition cities and enterprises are very active towards participating in the Forum.
2, Main features of the 2nd China Convention and Exhibition Forum

Officials in charge from the Commerce Department of the US, the Ministry of Economics and Labor of Germany, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce of Romania, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, and Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) will also participate in the Forum to discuss the management systems of convention and exhibition industries home and abroad. Mayors of well-known exhibition cities such as Munich and Dusseldorf of Germany, State of Nevada and Houston of the US, and Beijing and Guangzhou of China will also be present at the Forum for exchanges and explorations over the relations between the convention and exhibition business and a city's development. Famous industrial organization such as AUMA (Exhibition and Trade Fair Committee for the German Economy), International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA), and Las Vegas Exhibition and Hospitality Association will also send their representatives to the Forum to engage in discussions over international exchanges and cooperation in the convention and exhibition industry. Besides, we will also be joined at the Forum by diplomatic officials from embassies of the US, Germany, France, Singapore and Romania for deliberations over extensive cooperation between the convention and exhibition industries of various countries. We expect the total number of participants to exceed 700, among which 100 are foreign participants. Therefore, this event is a high-level forum for the convention and exhibition industry of the highest profile and largest scale in China.
Second, a Forum of rich content and diversified forms
The second Forum will consist of one main forum and several sub-forums. The main forum will organize in-depth discussions and exchanges of views from the perspectives of government agencies, industrial associations, exhibition companies and experts on the five topics of system and policy, coordination and promotion, brand-name strategy, international exchanges and development trend, with the aim of enabling the participants a sufficient understanding of the administration and regulation and development direction of China's convention and exhibition industry, and of the latest development trends, market exploration experience and brand-name operation of the industries home and abroad. Sub-forums will be centered on two themes, namely convention and exhibition, and festival and event, and will invite experts in the industry to deliberate on hot issues such as merger and acquisition and capital operation, certification and brand-name promotion, festival sponsorship, and risk management. The forum will provide a platform for people engaged in the convention and exhibition business home and abroad to have thorough exchanges and communications, so as to deepen mutual understanding, expand cooperation fields and work together to promote the sound, stable and rapid development of the convention and exhibition industry.
Third, a grand gathering of famous convention and exhibition enterprises featuring internationalization.
In a bid to enhance international exchanges and cooperation, the second Forum has extended invitation to the world's famous convention and exhibition companies, as well as foreign government officials, mayors, and representatives of industrial associations. Senior officers of renowned exhibition companies such as Munich, Dusseldorf, Leipziger, Lizhan, CPM Asia, ITE, Milan and Verona will share their observations regarding how to explore international markets through the convention and exhibition industry, and how to carry out comprehensive cooperation between the convention and exhibition industries of various countries.
1. Fourth, extensive discussions on innovative development of and exchanges and cooperation in the festival and event business
In view of the close links between the festival and event business and the convention and exhibition industry, the Second Forum has especially earmarked seminars on the innovative development of and exchanges and cooperation in the festival and event business. Major focus will be given to the development trend of the festival and event business, its relations with city development, festival and event sponsorship, commercial insurance, human resources training, brand-name cultivation, and the linkage between the festival and event business and the convention and exhibition industry. Therefore, the Forum will offer a favorable opportunity for enhancing exchanges and promoting the coordinated development of the convention and exhibition industry and the festival and event business.
The Second Forum has been receiving great attention and active support from convention and exhibition circles both home and abroad. It's my hope that the media can continue to increase your coverage of China's convention and exhibition business, so as to attract more attention from the general public to this industry and create a sound atmosphere for the success of the Forum.
I am confident that, with the concerted efforts of all parties concerned, the Second China Convention and Exhibition Forum will be a complete success, and prove conducive to the sound and orderly development of China's convention and exhibition industry.
谢谢大家。 Thank you!
