第5课 MAHMOOD'S DAY OFF

2006-07-29 10:01

When Gary said, 'Why people don't talk one?' he should have said, 'Why don't they say anything?'. Also, he should have said, 'I will put you through,' instead of 'I would put you through'.

Jane is arriving at the office……

  Jane: Morning everyone!

Nora and Mei Ling: (Together)Morning / Good morning

Nora: Oh, Mei Ling, do you have a paper bag? My Mahmood's bald.

Jane: (Joking) You're gonna cover your son's bald head with a paper bag? Why don't you buy him a wig?

Nora: Don't joke, lah! He's not botak! I need a paper back - something for him to read. He's very bored. Nothing to do.

Jane: Why? Isn't he at school?

  Nora: No……They cancel his football……CCA.

Mei Ling: I know Jane's joking, but you must pronounce your words more clearly. You made 'bored' sound like 'bald' and 'paperback' sound like 'paper bag'.

  Nora: So how?

Mei Ling: 'I'd like a paperback. My son's bored.'

Nora: (pronouncing the words carefully) I'd like a paperback. My son's bored.

  Jane: What's a CCA?

Mei Ling: That's a co-curricular activity…… all kids have to do them in Singapore.

Nora: He's not doing much now, though…… His tooth drop on Saturday and very pain, so he didn't go to his English class at the British Council.

Jane: (not understanding) That sounds bad…… Where does he go to school?

Nora: You mean 'Where he's schooling?' ?

Jane: Maybe in Singlish, but in good English we ask: 'Where does he go to school?'

Nora: Ahhhh!…… (answering) he goes to school in Ghim Moh…… he's in Primary 4.

Narrator: Well, now you can see how important it can be to pronounce the ends of words properly.

  Replay……

Nora: Oh, Mei Ling, do you have a paper bag? My Mahmood's bald.

Jane: (Joking) You're going to cover your son's bald head with a paper bag? Why don't you buy him a wig?

Narrator: Later, Jane didn't understand why Mahmood didn't go to the British Council on Saturday. Why was that?

  Replay……

Nora: His tooth drop an Saturday and very pain, so he didn't go to his English class at the British Council.

Jaya: We should say 'His tooth fell out on Saturday and it was very painful'.

Narrator: And that's it for today - and don't forget! You don't have to be bored to call in tomorrow!
