  Part One A Call from Outside

  [Scene: Mr White (W) calls the Friendship Hotel. The operator (O) answers the call.]

  O: Good morning. The Friendship Hotel Operator. What can I do for you?

  W: Good morning. I want to invite Mr & Mrs Bellow to a party this evening. I called their room, but no one answered. May I leave a message for them?

  O: That's all right. May I know their room number, sir?

  W: Room 1710.

  O: Mr & Mrs Bellow, in Room 1710.

  W: Yes, that's it. Can you tell them that the Whites called to invite them to dinner tonight?

  O: Dinner tonight. Where and when will that be, sir?

  W: In your Lily Restaurant at 6:30 p.m……

  O: May I read back the message to see if it is correct, please? Mr White called at 10:30 a.m. to invite Mr & Mrs Bellow in Room 1710 to dinner this evening at 6:30 p.m. at Lily Restaurant of this hotel.

  W: Right.

  O: Mr White, may I have your telephone number so that the Bellows can call back if necessary?

  W: 501-1712.

  O: 501-1712. Thank you for calling, sir. We'll tell them as soon as they come back.

  W: Thank you.

  O: You are most welcome.

  Part Two Making a Collect Call

  (IO = International Operator, O = Operator, W = Mr Theron White)

  IO: This is Bombay for Mr Theron White. Do you know his room number, please?

  O: Yes, it's 2820.

  IO: Thank you.

  O: Is this a pay call?

  IO: It's collect.

  O: May I know who is calling, please?

  IO: Yes, Pradip Patel.

  O: How do you spell that, please?

  IO: Pakistan P, America A, Tokyo T, England E, London L.

  O: Mr Pradip Patel. Thank you. Just a moment, please. (calls Room 2820)

  May I speak to Mr Theron White, please?

  W: Speaking. What's the matter?

  O: This is the Hotel Operator. I have a collect call from Mr Pradip Patel in Bombay. Will you accept the charges?

  G: Yes, of course.

  O: Thank you. Please hold the line.

  …… (speaks to the International Operator) ……

  Hello. Mr White will accept the call. Could you give me your operator number, please?

  IO: Yes, it's 32.

  O: Thank you. My number is 51. Could you give me the time and the charges after the call, please?

  IO: Yes, of course.

  O: Thank you. Go ahead, please.

  Part Three Wake-up Call Service

  (O = Operator, W = Mr White)

  O: This is the operator. May I help you?

  W: I'm leaving for Britain tomorrow morning. Will you please give me a call in the morning?

  O: Certainly, sir. What's your room number?

  W: 1108.

  O: At what time?

  W: At around 7:00 a.m……

  O: We have a computer wake-up service. Please dial 5 first and then the time. For 7:00 a.m., press 5 and then 0700 for the time. There must be five digits in the final number.

  W: 5-0700, I see.

  O: That's right, sir. Our computer will record the time and your room number.

  W: Thank you.

  O: You're welcome, sir. Have a good sleep.
