  Part One Asking the Way

  (R = Receptionist, G = Guest)

R: Good morning. Can I help you?

G: Yes, please. Will you please tell me the simplest way to the Zhongshan Temple?

R: Yes, of course. The simplest way is by taxi. There is a taxi stand at the entrance here. If you can't find a taxi there, you can always hail one in the street. Shall I get one for you?

G: What are the rates, please?

R: It's 2.40 yuan for every kilometer. It's about 50 yuan to get to the Zhongshan Temple.

G: 0h, I see. Would you please tell me how I can get there by bus?

R: Yes. You may take bus No.1. But I'm afraid the bus will be very crowded at this time of the day.

G: 0h, I like crowds. They give me warmth.

R: Well, in that case, you can walk outside the hotel. Then turn right to Jinling Road, walk along the Jinling Road for about three minutes and the bus stop is right in front of you.

G: A11 right. Walk outside the hotel. Then turn right to Jin …… Jin …… What is the road, please?

R: Turn right to Jinling Road. Here, let me write it down for you.

G: No, thank you. I can't read the pinyin system anyway.

Well, I think I'll have to resign myself to the taxi fare, then. Good-bye to the warmth of the crowd.

Part Two Arranging a Tour Bus

  (R = Receptionist, G = Guest)

R: Is there anything I can do for you, Miss Watson?

G: Oh, yes. I'd like your advice on a weekend tour for my group of tourists.

R: I'll be delighted to help you. Let me write this down: A2-day Itinerary. What would you like to do most?

G: We want to see some of the famous scenic spots outside Nanjing. But there seems to have so many places to choose from. And we've got only two days.

R: Yes, two days is a bit tight. But you can cover a lot of places if you plan carefully. Are there any particular spots your tourists wish to see?

G: They are interested in some of the most famous scenic spots of Jiangsu Province. And if you could arrange a visit to a folk arts and crafts factory, it would certainly be a great treat for them.

R: Let me make sure if I've got it right: you want to visit some scenic spots, for which Jiangsu Province is well-known, and also to visit an arts and crafts factory.

  G: That's right.

R: For the scenic spots, I would recommend Wuxi Yuantouzhu (or the Turtle-head Park) and Lingshan Buddha. It's only 2-hour's train from here. Then you can visit the famous Wuxi Huishan Clay Figurines Factory. There you can see the artisans making the clay figurines.

G: Do we have to do a lot of walking to get to Yuantouzhu? I'm afraid I have to cut down on walking since my tourists are all a bit old!

R: Well, you don't have to do a lot of walking. Our bus can pick up your group at the gate. Do you want an air-conditioned bus?

G: 0h yes, that's most essential in this kind of heat. And we also need a tour guide.

R: A11 right. What about lunch? Do you want me to arrange a proper lunch or just packed lunches?

G: A good meal if you can.

R: Well, Lingshan Buddha is well known for vegetarian food.

They can do you quite a variety of vegetarian dishes.

G: That's great! At least it'll be a new experience for most of us. You'd better tell me something about eating in a monastery so that I know what to tell them. I feel such a fool without knowing what food to expect, and I am the leader.

R: Don't worry. Here's all the information you need. Things like bean curd, bamboo shoots, Chinese mushrooms, gingko nuts, cloud fungus, snow fungus, hair vegetable, etc……

G: Good, that's exactly the sort of information I need.

  Part Three City Tour

  (R = Receptionist, G = Guest)

R: Good evening, madam and sir. What can I do for you?

G: We're free tomorrow. My wife and I like to go on a tour of the city. Would you introduce some scenic spots in Wuxi to me?

R: May I suggest that you go and visit Yuantouzhu (or the Turtle-head Park) and Jichang Garden, the Peace mind Garden?

They are very popular with the tourists.

G: Why are those places so popular?

R: Yuantouzhu is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Wuxi. It's especially well-known for its natural beauty——the Taihu Lake. In the middle of the lake near Yuantouzhu, there stands a series of hills called Three-Islets where live a lot of monkeys. They draw great interests from the visitors.

G: What about the Jichang Garden?

R: The Jichang Garden, the Peace mind Garden is one of the most famous classical gardens in China. It was built in the Qing Dynasty. The garden is famous for its lattice windows. They are exquisite and of high artistic value. Very beautiful, indeed.

G: Great! I'll go there and take some pictures tomorrow. Thank you very much.

R: You're welcome. Good-bye. Hope you have a good time.

  G: Good-bye.

  Part Four Leaving a Message

  (R = Receptionist, G = Guest)

R: Good morning! This is the Information Desk. May I help you?

G: I tried to contact Mr Graham in Room 1204 but he was out. Could you try to locate him for me?

R: Hold on, please …… I'm afraid he is not in. Would you like to leave a message?

G: Yes. Can you ask him to call me back as soon as he arrives at the hotel?

R: Certainly, sir. May I know who's speaking, please?

  G: Richard Steward.

R: Yes, Mr Steward. May I have your phone number, please?

  G: It's 025-588-8181.

R: 025-588-8181. Is that the complete message?

  G: Yes, that's all.

R: I'll repeat your message. The message is for Mr Graham in Room 1204 from Mr Richard Steward. Please call him back at 025-588-8181 when he arrives at the hotel. Is that correct?

  G: That's right. Thank you.

R: You're welcome. My name is Lili. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further enquiry.
