  701. the very idea 可表示“愤怒”。例如:

  The very idea of his telling you that story!(他告诉你那样的假话!)

  very也可表示“甚至于”的意思。例如:

  Mr. Thomson was such a miser that he wouldn't leave a penny to his very wife.

  (汤姆逊先生是如此吝啬,连自己的老婆都不给留下一个子儿。)

  702. 英语里“as+形容词原级+名词+as ever”是形容词最高级的变形,即以原级代替最高级的一种。译成汉语是“最”,“极”的意思。这种句型等于“the+形容词最高级+that+ever”。又例如:

  Newton is as great a scientist as ever lived. (=Newton is the greatest scientist that ever lived.)(牛顿是世界上最伟大的科学家)。

  703. nice(good) and 强调其后面的形容词或副词。例如:

  I didn't like the speech, but at least it was nice and short.

  (我不喜欢这个演讲,但至少并不冗长。)

  704. to say the least, not to speak of , not to mention, to say nothing of 加强肯定或否定的语气。例如:

  在肯定句中:

  X to say nothing of Y,(不必说Y,连X也……)=Not only Y but also X( 不但是Y,而且是X)。换言之,即是“连X也……何况……Y”的意思,这样把两方面都肯定了。

  在否定句中:

  not X to say nothing of Y=not X, much less Y(连X也不,更说不到Y了)。这样在否定句中把两方都否定了。又例如:

  He has experience, to say nothing of (=as well as) scholarship.

  (他有经验,又有学问〈或:更不必说学问了〉。)

  He has no scholarship, to say nothing of (=much less) experience.

  (他无学问,更说不上经验了。)

  705. if a 说明一个人的年龄,身高等。例如:

  He is six feet high, if he is an inch.(他准有六英尺高。)

  He is seventy, if a day.(他一定七十岁了。)

  The enemy is 2,000 strong, if a man.(敌人无论如何不下两千人。)

  706. and that 加强其后面的词或词组。

  that 是代词,代替前面整句的意思,and that可译为“而且”。例如:

  He only speaks English and that not very well.(他只会讲英语,而且讲得不很好)。

  跟and that 相类似的还有and…at that. 例如:

  It's an idea, and a good one at that.(这倒是个主意,而且是个好主意。)

  707. nothing but(不过,只是),例如:

  Winds are nothing but moving air.(风不过是运动着的空气罢了)。

  708. anything but(决不是),例如:

  He is anything but a scholar.(他决不是学者。)

  709. no more than (不过,仅仅),例如:

  He is no more than shyster.(他不过是一个讼棍)。

  710. no more other than(不是别人〈或:他物〉而正是……)。例如:

  The new arrival was none more other than the President.

  (刚才到达的就是总统本人)。(强调总统本人)

  711. none but=only,例如:

  They chose none but the best.(他们只挑最好的)。

  712. 句中nothing else than=only, entirely. 又例如:

  What he told you was nothing else than nonsense.(他所告诉你的全是胡说八道)。

  713. nothing if not=much, very, extremely“非常”,“极”。例如:

  He was nothing if not clever.(他非常聪明)。

  714. nothing of not=nothing else but (或:than)=nothing but,故

  He was nothing if not clever.=He was nothing of he was not clever.

  715.(just)as…so…(正如…一样,…也…)。例如:

  Just as Darwin discovered the law of development of organic nature so Marx discovered the law of development of human history.

  (正如达尔文发现了有机自然发展的规律一样,马克思也发现了人类历史发展的规律。)

  716. A is to B what X is to Y(A之于B犹如X之于Y)。例如:

  Leaves are to the plant what lungs are to the anima1.(叶之于植物犹如肺之于动物)。

  1) A is to B what X is to Y2) A is to B as X is to Y

  3) As X is to Y, so is A to B4) What X is to Y, that is A to B

  717. no more(not any more)…than…(不……正如……不……一样)。例如:

  A student can no more obtain knowledge without studying than a farmer can get harvest

  without ploughing.(学生不学习不能获得知识,正如农民不耕种不能获得收获一样)。

  718. more…than…(与其说是……,不如〈毋宁〉说是……)。例如:

  The so-called division between the pure scientist and the applied scientist is more apparent than real.(纯科学家与应用科学家之间的所谓区别,与其说是真的,毋宁说是表面的)。

  719. not so much…as…(与其说是……,不如〈毋宁〉说是……)。例如:

  The man who does the greatest things does them not so much by fitful efforts, as by steady,

  continued toil.(做伟大事业的人,做这些事与说是靠一阵子努力,毋宁说是靠坚持不懈的苦干)。

  Not so much A as B = less A than B= not A, but rather B= more B than A

  在not so much…as…句型中,as有时可改用but.

  此句型中的so much 如果和not 分开,和as 连用,意义完全一样,成为not A so much as B.  not so much as … = not even…(连……也不),不能分开写。

  not much as 有副词作用,有时not 可用 without代替。

  720. more than 后跟名词(不只是,非但……尤其是……)。

  more often than not=as often as not“常常”。

  During foggy weather the trains are late more often than not.(有雾时火车常常误点。)

  721. more than(more…than…)+含用can的从句,表示“否定”的意思。

  This is more than I can tell.(这是我不能告诉你的。)

  722. Nothing(no)+more(less)+than…表示“最高级”的意思。例如:

  Nowhere is race prejudice more clearly seen than in South Africa and in the southern states

  of the U.S.A.(种族偏见在南非和美国南部各州表现得最为明显。)

  723. as…as any表示“最高级”的意思。例如:

  He is as brave as any man alive.(他是世界上最勇敢的人)。

  He is as bright as any in the class.(他是班上最出色的)。

  724. Nothing(no)+so…as…(再没有比……更……的了)。

  No student is so diligent as this one.(再没有比这个学生更用功的了。)

  在这个句型中,no +单数名词+so+形容词原级+as+单数名词或代词。

  725. so much so that(到这样程度以致于……)。例如:

  He spoke rapidly, so much so that we could not clearly understand him.

  (他讲得太快,我们简直不能清楚地了解他的意思。)

  726. not so …but(that)…,not such a …but(that)…(不是如此……以致于不……).例如:

  No man is so old but (that) he may learn.(没有人老到不能学习的)。

  727. all but(几乎,除……之外,都……)例如:

  This book contains all kinds of knowledge, it is all but an encyclopedia.

  (这本书包括各种知识,几乎是一本百科全书。)

  728. none(not)the +比较级(不因……而更好〈坏〉)。例如:

  A good tale is none the worse for being twice told.(好故事虽再讲也不厌)。(谚语)

  For all his years, he is none the less vigorous and active.

  (他虽年老,但仍然生气勃勃,精力旺盛)。

  729. It is in (或with)…as in(或with)…(……犹如……)。例如:

  It is in studying as in eating: he who does it gets the benefits and not he who sees it being

  done.(读书犹如吃饭,得益的是动手做的人,而不是看人家做的人。)

  730. something of …, anything of …, nothing of …,a bit of…, much of …, a great deal of …,

  a little of …等表示分量或程度。例如:

  He is something of a lawyer.(他略知法律。)

  Is he anything of a scholar?(他有一点学问吗?)

  动词如果不用be而用have,则在后面用“in +代词或名词。”例如:

  He has something of the hero in him.(他颇有英雄气概)。

  731. as+人或物+go(就……一般而论)。例如:

  She was a good cook as cooks go.(就一般厨子而论,她是一个好厨子。)

  He is a good teacher, as teachers go.(就一般教师而言,他是一个好教师)。

  732. as far as 或 so far as (直到……的程度,就……而言)。例如:

  I will try as far as I can.(我愿就我所能去做。)

  I am going by train as far as Shanghai, and then take ship for Japan.

  (我将乘火车直达上海,然后乘船到日本。)

  733. as good as (几乎等于,差不多)。例如:

  She claimed that he as good as promise to marry her.(她宣称,他实际上要答应娶她。)

  734. as much, as many(同量,同程度;同一的事,同样)。例如:

  I found him rather careless and said as much to him.

  (我发现他有些粗枝大叶,并直率地向他说了。)

  735. as it is (was)(照现在的样子,照当时的样子;实际上)。例如:

  Report the fact as it is.(如实报告。)

  736. may as well…as…(可以……也可以……);might as well…as…(不可以……,同样也不可以……)。例如:

  You may as well call a cat a little tiger as call a tiger a big cat.

  (你可以称猫为小老虎,正像你可以称老虑为大猫一样。)

  737. not that…but that…(并非因为……而是因为……)。例如:

  Not that I dislike the work, but that I am un-equal to it.

  (不是因为我不喜欢这个工作,而是因为我不胜任。)

  but之后的 that有时可以省去。

  738. (all)the better for…;not the less for…(因……而更……;不因……而较不……)。例如:

  I love him all the better for his faults.(正因他有过失,所以我更爱他。)

  As he has faults, I love him the better.(因他有过失,我格外爱他。)

  739. what with…and (what with) …;what by…and(what by) …(一半因为……,一半因为……;或因……,或因……)。例如:

  What with the wind and what with the rain, our walk was spoiled.

  (风和雨使得我们无法散步)。

  句中what用作副词,等于partly. with表示“原因”,by表示“手段”。

  740. but for…,but that…(倘若不是,要是没有,要不是)。例如:

  But for his help, we should fail.

  But for his help, we should have failed.(如果没有他的帮助,我们就失败了。)

  But that he saw it, he could not have believed it .(要不是亲眼看见,他是不会相信的。)

  741. must/have to …before…can<could>…(必须〈只有〉……才能……),表示“条件”。例如:

  Electronic computers must be programmed before they can work.

  (必须为电子计算机编好程序,它才能工作。)

  742. may well表示“理由”。其意思是“很可以……”例如:

  He may well be proud of his son.(他很可以因他的儿子而自豪。)

  743. and连接两个平行句,第一句表示“原因”。例如:

  He tried hard, and passed the exam.(他努力学习,所以考试及格了。)

  744. not…because(不因……而……;不以……而……)。例如:

  The country is not strong because it is large.

  这名话不能译为:(国家并不强大,因为它大。)

  而应译为:(国强不在于大。)

  745. while 引导从句表示“让步”。例如:

  While I admit that the problems are difficult, I don't agree that they cannot be solved.

  (虽然我承认这些问题困难,但我不同意说他们不能解决。)

  746. still, yet用在相反意义的句子前,表示“让步”。例如:

  It is very unpleasant affair. Still, we can't change it.

  (它虽是一件很不愉快的事情,但我们不能改变它。)

  747. For all (that)引导短语或从名,表示“让步”。例如:

  For all their modern weapons, the enemy were eventually defeated.

  (敌人虽然有着现代化的武器,但终于还是被打败了。)

  748. the+最高级形容词,表示“让步”。例如:

  The wisest man cannot know everything.(即使是最聪明的人也不能什么都知道。)

  749. not but that(what)=though.例如:

  He's never walked that far─not but what he could do it if he tried.

  (他从未走那么远,虽然他要走还是可以走的)。

  750. (It is)true(that) …but…(诚然……但是……)。例如:

  It is true that he is not clever, but he is very diligent.

  (他诚然不怎么聪明,但却非常用功。)
